About the University of Phoenix

The University of Phoenix was founded in 1976 by a pioneer in adult education, Dr. John Sperling. His goal was to give working adult students an opportunity that wasn’t really available at the time. 30 years ago, most universities served students age 18-22 and Sperling felt older students were being treated as second-class citizens on traditional campuses.

Today, the average age of a University of Phoenix students is 33 years old in undergraduate studies and 36 years old in graduate studies. A majority of these students are working adults who are juggling studies and job responsibilities. The University of Phoenix started with just 8 students and has grown to become the largest private university in North America.

More than 345, 000 students are now enrolled in the University of Phoenix. A campus in San Jose, California opened in 1980 and today there are more than 200 locations in 40 states. The University of Phoenix became one of the first to provide online programs in 1989. It’s estimated 75 percent of University of Phoenix students are enrolled in online courses.
