Computer Forensics Degree

Computer forensics is the study of retracing the life of an electronic device including computers and their components. Computer forensics is a relatively new field of study, given that computers are much more prevalent in today’s business and personal world. Graduates of a computer forensics degree program are called upon to testify in courts and solve crimes using the electronic history of a machine. They search for clues to things like bank fraud, insurance fraud, and even help solve other crimes that may have involved two people and their communications through e-mail and online chat.

Most students who want a computer forensics degree will earn a bachelor’s degree. This 4-year degree program could consist of courses like:

Criminal Law
Criminal Procedure
Operating Systems
Law of Searching & Seizing Digital Evidence
Computer and Network Security
White Collar Crime
Digital Forensics Analysis
Cybercrime
Linux or Windows Server Administration

In many cases, schools that offer a computer forensics degree will require some form of internship. This gives students a great opportunity to shadow or even get hands-on experience with a computer forensics professional already in the field. Being able to establish some form of positive rapport with someone already in the field can prove to be very valuable when applying for jobs.

Some colleges even offer this type of degree program online, fit for anyone who has a computer at home with a working internet connection. Since this type of degree is still relatively new to many colleges, a local college or university near you may have yet to offer this degree in the academic catalog. Online computer forensics degrees give you the opportunity to major in that course of study without having to leave your front door.
